I think he's failing to read between the lines. This is fundamentally a problem that involves a teenager (I'm guessing?) asserting her independence and her parents being unprepared for it. The stuff about being insulted that she wants to cook and that she isn't taking part in family traditions makes that pretty clear. That it happens to take the form of a conflict about diet is kind of secondary.
Also, did he really attempt to resolve the problem that they don't like her cooking by suggesting that she cook for them? Hey, thanks, guy. I wish I had that kind of incisive problem-solving skill.
